Government and military requirements for transformers and inductors are special only in the physical nature of the devices. Most times, the construction of the devices must be subjected to high vibration and high G-forces and still survive. The electrical specifications do not change from those specs created for the Telecom industry. Magnetic material specified for this class of converter is therefore usually chosen for survivability. Ferrite is rather brittle and requires sealing with epoxies and inside rugged containers. Other materials such as powder cores offer an increase in mechanical strength just due to their manufacturing. Nanoperm® is already mounted is cases to protect the foils. Therefore as a result of the mechanical requirements, the preference of use of materials is powder cores and nanoperm®.
Use of Powder core in government/military converter
- Flyback converters – High Flux and MPP material
- Output chokes – Sendust and MegaFlux
Use of Nanoperm® in government/military converters
- Forward Converter <100KHz
- Common Mode Choke
- Ship Board EMI Control
