Losses Over a Wide Temperature Range
As electronic devices are in the trend of miniaturization and higher efficiency, there is increased demand for small and higher efficiency transformers used in DC to DC converters and inverters. At the same time, electronic devices are being used under a broader range of temperature conditions, exemplified by the increased use of electronic devices in automobiles requiring high efficiency in a wide temperature range. MnZn ferrites have low core losses, which minimize heat generation, and high saturation, magnetic flux density, making it well suited for use in the main transformers of switching power supplies. It is generally known that core losses of MnZn ferrites are minimized at the temperature where magnetic anisotropy constant (k1) is zero, and the inability to reduce core losses over a wide temperature range has been an issue for many years. This problem has been addressed by creating series of materials with different minimum core loss temperatures for different applications. TDK has improved the technologies of material and process to precisely control its microstructure and temperature dependence of magnetic properties. This has allowed it to substantially reduce core losses and dependence on temperature and to develop the PC95, which has low core losses over a wide temperature range. The PC95 has core losses of less than 350 kW/m³ (100 kHz,200 mT) in the temperature range of 25°C to 120°C, which is less than those of previous materials (such as TDK’s PC44 material). PC95 is the industry’s leading, wide temperature range low loss material for use in power supplies. Since the PC95 can be used in near-optimal conditions over a broad temperature range of 25°C to 120°C, it is well suited for use not only in conventional switching power supplies, but also in the main transformers of DC to DC converters of electric automobiles such as hybrid electric and fuel cell electric vehicles, which experience wide variations in operating temperatures. PC95 is certain to contribute to the further miniaturization and higher efficiency of a wide range of power supplies as well as lighter and more fuel-efficient automobiles. In addition, use of PC95 in transformers in such devices as LCD backlight inverters that use multiple transformers that are used at different temperatures will be effective in reducing overall heat generation and power consumption. PC95 is initially available in ferrite cores for Board Mounted Power in the shapes of EL/ELT, ER/EIR, PQI (including the new PQI16), EI, and RM/RMI.
