Nanocrystalline Replaces High Perm Ferrite in Common Mode Chokes

June 24th, 2010 Eric Hagarty No comments

The ferrite industry has been affected by an extreme shortage of product in 2010. This is primarily due to an increase in ferrite consumption in Asia. We have seen ferrite manufacturers either discontinue their 15K permeability ferrite or highly restrict the manufacturing of this extreme material. (15K perm material is very difficult to make and keep within spec) Even the 10K permeability material is seeing lead times of 30 weeks and longer.

MH&W International is offering a solution to the problems of high perm ferrite and the shortage of high perm ferrite with our Nanocrystalline toroidal cores for common mode chokes. There are significant advantages of Nanocrystalline over 15K & 10K perm material.

Recent Design Win with Major Wind Nacelle Manufacturer Celebrated in Mahwah

MH&W International, Corp. is celebrating yet another design win by extending the life of bearings in wind turbine generator drives. A major manufacturer of wind turbine generators has recently awarded MH&W International, Corp. a contract to supply Magnetec Cool Blue Nanocrystalline cores for all new wind systems.

“Our customers are experiencing an extended bearing lifetime of more than 10 times in real applications by using Cool Blue Cores from Magnetec! This is saving our customers scheduled and unscheduled down time, cost of components, and eliminating the safety factor of having to repair and replace due to damaged bearings within the generator”, says Bill Wilson National Sales Manager of MH&W Renewable Energy Products division. “This is a very exciting time for us. Our engineering and sales team has once again demonstrated that they know what it takes to provide solutions to the wind energy market…MH&W and Magnetec are clearly the leader in North America”.

The MH&W team has played a key role in winning this contract by extending bearing life on major wind turbine generators with the use of Magnetec’s Cool Blue cores. Cool Blue cores totally absorb the unwanted asymmetric current, which runs over sensitive parts like bearings, gearboxes and couples into electrical steering lines. As a consequence of those parasitic currents, the bearings corrugate followed by electrical breakdown of the lubrication which soon causes an early failure and standstill of the generator. The result of the Magnetec cores to the system is increased service life of motor bearings, and reduced maintenance and stoppages. Reliability of the system is rising because of reduced radiated emissions, too.

Service, repair, and power owner companies are now installing Cool Blue Cores to extend their service contracts for the wind turbine, too.
